On July 5th, 2004, a joint agreement for the development of a Plan of Excellence in Tourism for the Municipality of Teguise was signed by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce, the Canary Board of Tourism, the Teguise City Hall and the Union for the Conservation of Costa Teguise.

The programme for the Plans of Excellence as well as for dynamic tourism, initiated by the Secretary of State for Tourism and Commerce, has put into effect a new tourism culture in Spain and has proven to be a clear example of the successful cooperation among various public administrations.

The projects within the Plans of Excellence do not involve major investments in basic infrastructure nor do they replace any existing public services, although they operate within these areas. A Plan of Excellence, in effect, complements overall improvements through careful attention to small details, which can be directly perceived by the tourist, thus adding more tourism substance to infrastructure investments and the services offered.

The Plan of Excellence for the Municipality of Teguise has arrived at a good moment to benefit the tourism sector as well as the Municipality itself. Teguise is being threatened by the growth of new tourist areas whose most recent developments have been more in accordance with real demands.

Faced with this situation, the Plan, and in particular its activities in Costa Teguise, must be directed to the development of this tourist zone, for both our visitors and residents, as a destination of quality; a standard under which this area was originally created.
