More Information

The gastronomy of Lanzarote is rich, due to the generous sea that surrounds the island.

Fine fish such as "la vieja" "el bocinegro" or "la sama" small shellfish of an exquisita taste such as limpets, winkies (burgados) or mussels, sundried fish (jareados) or sardines and tuna fish from the Sahara banks are served at the restaurants of Lanzarote together with "papas arrugadas" (wrinkled potatoes) and the famous "mojos" which are spicy sauce obtained from a mixture of oil, vinegar, garlic and different spices according to the kind of "mojo" you want to obtain, red or picón, or green mojo.

So, we suggest either for a quality lunch or dinner to order fish, fresh fish or dried fish; grilled or in sauce, always served as the island style.

It is not only fish we can eat on the island but also well cooked meat such as kid, goat or pork leg, cooked in the oven which is the speciality of the Canary Islands.

Potato stew is a basic dish since the introduction of potatoes from America and it is always a good election.

The "sancocho" salted fish casserole served with potatoes, sweet potatoes and "mojo", fish soup or chickpeas are part of the diet of the people of the island and are also very appreciated by the Visitors.

The "gofio", com flour or other roasted cereals was used as a basic ingredient by the native people long before the european colonization and continues being part of the diet of the island for its nutritional value. Different ways of having "gofio" are for breakfast, mixed withmilk, in soupsand stews, with fish soup, seasoned with spices, with banana, almonds and honey and many more.

Cheese is also typical of the island, hand elaborated from goat milk. The mixture with milk from other mammals'milk, such as sheep or cow and the maturing make a wide variety of cheese that goes from fresh cheese, with a little acid taste, to mature, smoked or covered with paprika or "gofio".

The thick desserts are the perfect end for a meal based on fish. "Frangollo" is the king of the sweets, made with corn flour, eggs, milk, almonds, raisins and served with honey or condensated milk, "Bienmesabe" or "truchas" stuffed with sweet potato, pumpkin or vermicelli are also magnificent desserts.

Lanzarote is a semi tropical island, so there is a wide variety of exotic fruit. Mangos, papayas, tunos, kiwis or guayabos will fill your table with colour and your stomach with an excellent Digestive.

Wine is produced in an area with "appellation d'origine", where we can find a dozen wine cellars, the oldest of which dates from the l8th century.

The wines from Lanzarote are of an excellent quality. When you drink wine, you are contributing to keep the agricultural activity ofthe island, to keep the landscape of La Geria and the system used by the agricultors to obtain the best from this dry land.

The restaurants: San José Castle, The Monument to the Peasant, "Jameos del Agua" and The Devil in Timanfaya offer the visitors the best variety of food from the island.

The incredible views over the bay, the posibility of going back in time and an exquisita decoration, the sensation of eating inside a volcanic tube and the possibility of a menu cooked onthe heat of a volcano, are four reasons to eat luch or diner at any of these Restaurants.
