The ceramic craft is
one of the most important elements of any popular culture.
The ceramic of the island hides its beauty in its primitivism
of shapes and decoration and it is related to the country
life and fertility.
The ceramics production
has been principally made by women, although at present,
after Doña Dorotea Armas died, this activity has
been taken up by men, such as Marcial de León who
continues producing domestic use objects and human figures
of a marked sexual character, like the "Novios del
Mojón". It was "El Mojón ",
the old pottery centre ofLanzarote that was transfered
to Muñique after the artisans were taken to this
Place.
Juan Brito is also important in the production of ceramics
on the island as he is another of the pupils of Dorotea.
He reconstitutes the native
life through his sculptures and he is a historian who
writes his theories on humid mud.
"Mitología de la Princesa Ico" is a group
of figures that shows not only the characters but also
their clothes, decoration and herearchization objets,
farming tools and shepherding, and an extraordinary journey
through the history of the island before the Reconquest.
